Omeprazole
Indications/Uses
Conditions where inhibition of gastric acid secretion may be beneficial including aspiration syndromes, dyspepsia, erosive esophagitis, GERD, duodenal & benign gastric ulcer & hypersecretory conditions eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Dyspepsia 20 mg daily for 2-4 wk. GERD 20 mg once daily for 4-8 wk. Refractory esophagitis 40 mg daily. Maintenance: 20 mg once daily. Childn 0.7-1.4 mg/kg daily up to a max of 40 mg for 4-12 wk. PUD 20 mg as a single dose. Severe cases 40 mg. Continue for 4 wk for duodenal ulcer & 8 wk for gastric ulcer. Maintenance: 20 mg once daily. NSAID-associated ulceration 20 mg once daily. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome Initially, 60 mg once daily. Prophylaxis of acid aspiration during general anesth 40 mg in the evening before the surgery & 40 mg 2-6 hr before surgery.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 1 hr before meals. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush. For patients w/ swallowing difficulties, carefully open cap & sprinkle contents in a spoonful of applesauce. Swallow immediately, do not chew. Do not store mixt for future use.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Consider possibility of malignancy in patients w/ gastric ulcer. Hepatic impairment. May increase risk of GI infection.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
May alter the metabolism w/ drugs metabolized by CYP2C19. May prolong the elimination of diazepam, phenytoin & warfarin. Reduced absorption of ketoconazole & itraconazole.
